Today we had a regional conference. I was selfishly excited because this meant Doug would be sitting with us, which meant that I might be able to listen to something on a Sunday. It started out rough, with Sydney and Brigham wanted my attention, crayons being thrown on the gym floor, etc. etc. Finally I got up and said, "Doug I'd really like to listen today, lets switch." I feel completely justified throwing the chaos on him since I have to do it every week alone. Oh, the glares he gets from me while sitting up on the stand.
It ended up being just the kind of meeting I needed. And it was so good that I wanted to write down my take-home message to hopefully be reminded of it later. The first thing that really struck me was to simplify. Simplify all the distractions in life. Food, apps on our phones, TV shows, activities, books, material possessions...anything. I can't even remember who it was that was speaking but he even suggested going home and specifically starting with one closet. Clean it out and move to other areas of the house, or our lives. He promised more peace as we do this.
Along with simplifying our lives, I was reminded that we do not need to clutter our lives with do-gooder things. I'm always so focused on "being" more this or that, and on who I haven't become. I feel pressure to get more involved in the community, the kids school, etc. etc. But it doesn't matter what I do in the community around me if I neglect my children at home. I can contribute more to our society by raising children who are responsible, confident, religious, faithful, strong, smart, moral, respectful, kind, and just good people. They are my top priority and if I'm prioritizing something that gets in the way, than it will never be worth it.
I chose to be a mother. I am proud to be a mother. Nothing else matters more than these precise children who have been sent to me from a loving Heavenly Father who trusts me enough to be the mother they need me to be. What a blessing that is.
