In lieu of all the parenting council that we received this past weekend, I thought I'd share some of my favorite "council / comments" that people have been so kind to give me on the streets and in the subway.I wish I would have carried a little notepad around with me b/c I can't remember them all but here are some of them:
- "Oh, my dog does that too" (in reply to a question about Leah's sleeping schedule).
- "I wanted a baby but...they turn into humans."
- "Oh what a cute little girl, we wanted a girl, but we had a boy." (I guess I should have informed her that it's legal to have more than one)
- "You're expecting another! Hopefully it's a boy b/c then you'd definitely be done."
- "Congratulations on your baby. My daughter just had twins. I quit my job to help her out. We did it all by ourselves." By the end of the conversation she said, "we only had a nanny from 7 am- 7 pm for the first year." (That's a great "did it all by ourselves" ratio)
- "Don't let your kid suck on those sunglasses, she'll get cancer." (I was in a bad mood so I had to say, "you mean to tell me we put these next to our eyes and they're a carcinogen?")
- "It's a good thing you're having another because you love this one too much. You spoil her!" (I guess you can tell a lot by just looking at someone)
- "I try not to ever say no to my child."
When it really comes down to parenting, I know nothing.

He he. I love it. You're too funny. The different perspective between New York child-bearin' and typical, Utah Mormon mommyhood must come out a lot in your subway chats.
Was I the "they turn into humans one" b/c I say that all the time.
K
no, that wasn't you. Someone was dead serious about not having babies b/c they didn't want to raise them.
Nice. Gotta love NY. My favorites the Nanny from 7-7. good grief what would these people do if there were no nannies? I guess there'd be a lot less babies in the world, at least around there. I will try and call you tomorrow, I think it's too late there tonight. Ok, talk soon.
My all time favorite, (after telling someone a story about child care)..."We'll I'm glad it's you and not me taking care of that kid." My reply, "I'm glad too."
I love it. Where do people come up with these things? I hope I don't start giving others random, unsolicited advice. I would hope that the advice I'd give would be better than what you and I have heard on the streets!!!
thanks Amber, that was great- I needed that laugh. where do people get off?- did this all really happen in one weekend? that is amazing! Sounds like you are surrounded by some fantastic examples of parenting. soak it up!
Holy cow what a fun experience you must be having! I remember going to DC and feeling out of place on the subways because I had blonde hair. Imagine if I had a kid too! So, do you like it there?
that hilarious. new yorker hate being sterotyped, but then they go and do that :)
That is awesome! I do have a washer and dryer, and that is definitely something I am VERY grateful for! (Except for the fact that it the washer flooded our house last year... ha ha! But I forgave it so I am back to loving it!) You guys are so cute - congrats on the new addition!
how Funny! I hate when people give me parenting advice...it's like, I don't need your advice, I can figure it out! Anyway, that is too funny :)
