Eventful

The past two weeks have been somewhat eventful in the Doxey home. I think many people can attest that when it rains, it pours. We've definitely had some showers, both good and bad. So here's the timeline (and no need to feel sorry, we eventually got to the point where we were just laughing about it all. And sorry, this is kind of long):

  • Monday (March 30): Surprise visit from my Mom. She came out to work as a lobbyist at the United Nations- defending the family, she didn't get to stay with us and we really didn't get to see her much.
  • Tuesday: Had a root canal done.
  • Wednesday: Pain from root canal gets worse and worse. I was taking 1000mg Tylenol & 800mg Advil and still the pain didn't go away. Doug finally demanded I go to the ER. We got home around 2 am with percocet. Doug has a HUGE final on Thursday.
  • Thursday: Doug goes to Philly for a podiatry conference for the weekend. I go to the dentist, still in a lot of pain. Sent home with "just bad inflammation from the root canal." My mom decides to miss the last day at the UN and come stay with us since I'm a little loopy on percocet. Early evening I start to feel a lot of pain in my cheek and notice it's swelling and really hot. It gets worse fast, obviously an infection, so I call my dentist. He's an NYU student and can't call in antibiotics AND can't get ahold of his instructor. I can't get a hold of Doug. Swelling spreads to my eye. Finally get in touch with Doug and have the doctor he's with call in antibiotics.
  • Friday: In a lot of pain. My dentist isn't at school and tells me to go straight to the emergency specialists (the school is in the city on 23rd & 1st, takes @ an hour to get there). I haven't be "referred" so they send me down stairs (meanwhile I'm bawling). They assign me some random student- I don't have much nice to say about her. Finally I tell her to stop and get me an endodontist NOW. He comes over and says to take me to the specialist immediately for an emergency I & D procedure.  I'm 3rd in line for emergencies, so I sit in the waiting room and continue to cry... seriously embarrassing. The doctor comes and gets me and with in 10 minutes has starts the incision and drainage "surgery" on me. The bacteria spread to my eye so they had to make an incision and then "knead" the bacteria out. I had four doctors working on me, two or which were holding me down. It was SO PAINFUL, I would rather give birth.  I'm eventually sent on my way and I'll just say I've never felt so alone as I did on the subway ride home. I was in so much pain, uncontrollably crying, and so swollen. I looked like I had just been beat up. People were pretty sensitive though.  Finish the day sleeping a lot, thanks to my Mom and Natasha. Oh, and my mom cancelled her flight to stay with us.
  • Saturday: Feeling a lot better but still very swollen. Doug gets home finally and says, "Oh Amber, you really are swollen." I guess he thought I was exaggerating a bit.
  • Sunday: Good day. Conference. Feeling a lot better.
  • Monday: I get up with the girls and almost first thing Leah pukes all over me.  My mom leaves.
  • Tuesday: Follow-up appt. Everything going well.
  • Wednesday: Paige gets sick, throws up all over Doug and all through the night.
  • Thursday: I get the bug. Nice. Emily and Chad (brother and sister-in-law) get here. Mother-in-law, Carol gets here.
  • Friday- Astoria playgroup Easter party. I'm main person in charge. Goes great. We leave with carol for Cape Cod. Doug gets minor version of bug.
  • Saturday- I get bug again. But still got to drive around Cape Cod area and saw beautiful landscape.
  • Sunday- Feeling better. Go to Martha's Vineyard...BEAUTIFUL. Get strange rash all over torso.
  • Monday- Still have strange rash but we're all feeling much better. Drive home. Carol's flight gets cancelled so we get to hang out one more night. Came home to a package from Dodee and Papa and flowers from Emm and Chad, couldn't have been better timing.
  • Tuesday- Me and the girls go for a run. Don't do much. Dentist appointment. Couldn't have been a better day. We were all very happy.
I hope we can go incident-free for a while. After not feeling normal for a while, it's so nice to just play with my kids. Trials like this help me to count my blessings, those that I overlook on a daily basis.

Natasha, Mom, you are the best. Thanks so much for all the help.

Awful pic- night before it got really bad.
Don't know what I would have done without my Mom.
After the egg hunt.
Leah got an old shoe at the fishing booth.
I think we had record attendance at the Egg hunt. Too bad this isn't what primary looks like.
Couldn't get any cuter.
We stopped in Newport, RI. I'd highly suggest going there. There are amazing mansions from the 1800's. Absolutely beautiful.
Martha's Vineyard. Edgertown lighthouse.
Martha's Vineyard. Oak Bluffs- such cute gingerbread houses.

Amber--I am so glad you are on the mend!! Wow--you deserve a huge break! I feel so bad about the Root Canal- and I am so sorry Mark couldn't do more to help you! Thankfully your Mom was there--what a huge blessing! Sounds like Cape Cod was awesome! I love the pictures!

Love the post. We feel informed and sympathetic to the mouth pain. I (Dan) too know that pain. I once had a similar incident where the pain was so bad I would have immediately signed loan documents for 100s of thousands of dollars to get it fixed. In that crazy state of mind I seriously thought, "Oh, it would be cheaper if I just asked Julie to beat me over the head with a baseball bat."

OUCH! Amber, that sounds terrible. I am so sorry you had to go through that pain. It was so good that your mom could be there to help you! I hope that you have some really easy, nice weeks ahead to make up for that!

I almost cried listening to your dental story. Ahhhh how painful and to have to ride in public in the Subway all the way home makes it even worse. I'm so so sorry I wish I could have been there to help you seriously!

Okay Amber - those were an incredible two weeks. As if the tooth infection wasn't enough you got the throw up bug in your house. I am not sure if anyone can understand what you are going through but I can empathize - as I sit imagining if I were in your situation but with my little ones needing me and having Rich out of town - I would have died seriously. Isn't it funny though how Heavenly Father never tries us beyond what we can handle - having your mom there is what saved you - without her it would have been way worse. Aren't we blessed to have such wonderful moms.
