Come what may and love it

I was extremely touched by Elder Wirthlins talk this past conference. Yesterday,  was a great day to put his counsel into action.

Out here we talk about bad 'New York' days. Sometimes, living in the city is EXTREMELY difficult. But you get over it.  I had such a day: to start it out, Paige had a doctor appt. It's pretty close to my house but too cold to walk and my double wouldn't even fit in the doors if I could walk.  So we drove, finding parking is a mess which made me late, I had to park a couple blocks away. I didn't have a stroller and Leah didn't want to walk because she's scared of the pigeons that so grace our sidewalks.  So I carried both Paige and Leah as they both screamed because they were cold. I won't even start with the kind of looks I got. As they were slipping out of my arms, I'm running and screaming, "I hate this stupid, inconvenient city. Where is a parking lot!"

Later, we had to get some car stuff done. I was sent on a wild goose chase looking for the used car repair shop. Once I finally found it, the many doors I tried were locked. I waved down a worker and asked where George was. He pointed to the correct door a ways down (how I was supposed to "guess" that one is beyond me). The problem was my kids were  asleep, I had to park on the street and didn't have quarters. The guys said he'll stay outside and keep an eye on my car. I trusted him and went inside. It was a quick "I can't do anything for you today lady" and I was out of there.

Next, I had a dentist appt at 4:30, my friend was very kind to watch the girls. But she didn't realize it'd be until 8. I've been in to the dentist every week or so for a while and I've never experienced such a crappy business. I've even tried three other dentists and this is the best so far. My teeth are killing me and have been for over a  couple months- it's frustrating, that's all I will say about that.

To top everything off...the real kicker...my bike was stolen. And our clipless pedals were still on my bike. I'm so sad.

When I got home, I started to cry a bit, out of frustration and pain. My sweet Leah stroked my hair and gave me a couple of kisses, then told Paigey to be quiet because mom is sad. Nothing could have been more endearing.

And when all is said and done, I can only laugh at the ridiculousness of it all.
*Whom ever took my bike,  I hope that they're really short (it was a size 14), can find some sweet trails,  and hope they appreciate those pedals.

ah, amber! i can so relate. it probably makes it worse when you come from a very convenient place like utah. it sounds like we were both there at the same time enjoying some good grandparent time. anyway, not much city living left! isn't it so frustrating?

Oh Amber. I don't know how you do it. When we were in New York I just kept saying, "How does Amber do this with kids?" I guess I shouldn't complain about going to the store with my 5 right?. There is always plenty of parking and the store is only a couple mins away.

And I am sorry about your bike. Getting things stolen is the worst thing. I would hope whom ever stole it would get stuck in those pedals and crash, maybe having to make a trip to the ER with a broken bone or something. Just another example of how you are a better person than me!

P.S. You will have to send me some pics of the headbands you made. I would love to see how they turned out!

Oh and that is my favorite talk so far. I loved it. Such a good message-one that I need to remember when I think things are too hard and I am hating my situation. I need to learn to embrace my trials and just love them for what they are teaching me and be happy!

Sorry for the over abundance of comments. I am done now.

i am sorry. if it makes you feel better life is hard out here in az too. i think we're all in a little funk. this summer someone stole my moms carat in a half diamond wedding ring that my dad gave to her back in the 80's and her other 25th anniversary ring with more diamonds. it was heartbreaking..... it took us a while to get over it... we moved on but anyways... im guess im just trying to say... stuff happens... and we have to move on. it sucks. you know how i got over it!? i decided it was meant to be... that if my mom had had those ring... maybe something in the future would of happened to her bad becuase of those rings... anyways.... good things you got your girls =) precious girls!! love ya! -mar

Amber,

Wow! I never experienced New York as a parent. I can't imagine how difficult it must be. Maybe that is why every New Yorker has a dog instead of children.

I hope all is well. Believe it or not, I really do miss New York. I look back on my time there with fondness.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

That sounds like an awful day. Seriously - life with two little munchkins makes even the simplest task a complicated one. I am glad to hear that you can look back on it with a different perspective. You are so good - to wish the new owner of your bike a good trip on the trails - I'd probably still be cursing his/her name.

Oh I almost cried reading your post! My mind went back to the times I've had rough mommy days! As for NYC the times I've visited mostly while living in CT I always found myself in Central Park because the craziness of it all! I don't know now how you do it honestly the building seem to engulf me and I feel all clostraphobic (sorry no spell check).

I wish I could have been there to hold one of your girls, or watch your kids while you got the car fixed but all I can do is tell you that you're doing alright! Keep it up and one day you can live anywhere you wish.

That stinks about your bike. I know I would be livid of someone did that to me! You certainly are taking it better than I would!

Amber, I so feel your pain. The funny thing is that just the other day you entered in my mind and I thought, MAN, they live in New York City...WITH KIDS! How in the heck do you do it?! You are so much tougher than I am! Good job for surviving and even being able to laugh after! How cute is Leah?! That was so sweet! Well we are off to Braden's Dr.'s appt. right now, so hopefully we'll have better luck:)

Love ya!
