A conversation

Yesterday the girls and I were at the Discovery museum. While the girls were doing a craft at the art table, I had a conversation with a kid, one year out of high school (he started by telling me that he and his girlfriend had a scare this morning, he said he almost thought he was going to be a Dad...okay TMI). The conversation didn't exactly follow this outline but here are the highlights:

kid: "Wait, you're 28 and you have 3 kids, what happened to your life?"
me: "My kids are my life."
kid: "No, I mean what happened before to your life.?"
me: "Uh, well I went to college, got married, and had my first baby the summer after I graduated."
kid: "Didn't you already have a good job?"
me: "No, I actually chose to be a stay-at-home mom."
kid: "oh, man. Kids aren't for me, thats why I'm just getting a dog."

(later in the conversation)
kid: I want to be a stay-at-home Dad," (wait, I thought kids weren't for you and you said you wanted to be a surgeon) "I was in culinary school so I already know how to cook so it won't be that big of a deal."
me: "Oh we do a lot more than just cook."
kid: "I honestly don't understand how people can get their house so dirty that they need to clean so often."
me: "okay, you really need kids!"
kid: "I'm OCD, my bedroom is perfectly organized and clean."
me: "yea, you NEED kids, that will knock the OCD right outta you."
kid: "I want 14 kids."

My thought now was...Hi, I'm Earth, have we met?

Another highlight from the museum: we were in the story book castle for story time. A high school age girl was reading the books. One of the books was a Mother Goose nursery rhymes book. Leah and Paige were the last ones in the castle and the girl was only half way through the book. I said, "You don't have to read the whole thing" (honestly it was torturous to listen to the monotone rhymes).
Her reply, "Well, I don't really get this book. It's like little stories that don't make sense."
me: "They're nursery rhymes."
her: "But it says mother goose on the front."

I didn't say anything, we just thanked her for reading and as I left I thought about how sad it is that apparently she wasn't read to as a child. Sad.

Wow - aren't people interesting. If only they could listen to the conversation - I am afraid they wouldn't even get it then!! Sad.

Love it! I guess I'm not that dumb after all! People and their opinions crack me up! Of course..... my opinions are always totally normal! :)

I have had postpartum depression after both of my kids. It seems like you haven't had a huge break between each kid to get out of the post partum era. I think things might be weighing so heavily on you because you may have postpartum depression. For me I finally gave in and went to the doctor. Now I don't have to worry about trying to see the bright side all the tine because I am happy and I just see it. It's ok to have ppd, a huge percentage of ladies do and it goes away. Love ya

Discovery indeed. Hope the reading girl wasn't one of my students... Scary!

Sounds like a lot needs to be discovered at the Discovery Museum

This post totally made me laugh out loud. I don't think anyone was truly "gets it" until they have their own kids. It changes everything. Seriously.

And I LOVE that line from Tommy Boy. Hilarious!

Ahhh, the joys of talking to people for whom kids are a consequence rather than a choice. That is seriously funny Amber. Love the post. You guys are awesome. Still trying to figure out how the Bay Area could make sense for ya all...
